The family should closely monitor the patient’s reaction in the first three days, pay attention to reducing fever and compensating for fluid, and not overusing fever-reducing medicines.
Dr. Do Duy Cuong, Director of the Tropical Center, Bach Mai Hospital, said that dengue patients can be prescribed home treatment without hospitalization. At that time, the patient needs absolute rest in a cool environment, drinking water mixed with oresol as directed, supplementing vitamins C, B1, drinking fruit juice, having good birth, eating liquid foods, easy to digest, rich in energy. , rich in protein such as lean meat porridge, soup … do not eat fatty foods and spices.
During the first three days, the patient only has a fever reaction, which should be closely monitored. The family members give the patient parcetamol as prescribed for fever reduction combined with cool compresses in the groin, armpits, folds, wiping the whole body with warm water, to wear airy clothing. Dosage of paracetamol should be 10-15 mg / kg body weight once, do not use aspirin or ibuprofen to reduce fever.
The family needs to pay special attention to the patient on 4-7 days when sick. If the patient is exhausted, sweating, cold limbs, abdominal pain, vomiting, shortness of breath, nosebleeds or tooth roots, menorrhagia, it should be taken immediately to the medical facility for treatment, to avoid complications.
Dr. Nguyen Dang Manh, Director of the Institute of Clinical Infectious Diseases, Military Central Hospital 108, said fever is a good response of the body to fight viruses. Patients and family members should not abuse high doses of paracetamol to reduce fever to normal temperature, thus causing liver toxicity, reducing the body’s immunity.

Do not just drink two packages of oresol mixed in a little water, do not mix the correct dose because it will disturb the body’s electrolytes. When having dengue fever, the patient should pay attention to drink enough fluids during the fever and when the fever is gone, avoid drinking too little or too much. If you drink too much water in the fever-free stage, the patient may develop acute pulmonary edema, which is life-threatening.
Doctor Manh recommends that family members and patients do not have impatience, need to perform well oral rehydration, symptoms decrease after 5-7 days and recover after a week. Patients do not need salt or other supplements after being discharged from the hospital because of the risk of excess fluid.
It is the peak season for dengue fever. The disease causes sudden, constant high fever, body aches, eye socket pain, pain on both temples. From day 4 onwards, patients may experience more severe symptoms such as lethargy, low urination, numbness, fatigue and pain, and bleeding in the skin and mucous membranes.
To prevent dengue fever, experts recommend that people clean their homes, clear out bushes, remove areas with stagnant ponds, standing water, and kill larvae (fling) to prevent mosquito transmission. Disease proliferates and avoids mosquito bites by sleeping nets, wearing long-sleeved clothing. When there are symptoms of a high fever that is constantly not relieved, everyone should go to the hospital for prompt examination and treatment.
